Hello Richmond, Berea and Lexington customers. This week’s Superior Carpet Cleaning post is dedicated to the longevity of your carpet. Follow these simple tips to maintain the life of your favorite floor cover.
A normal routine with your carpet is a great way to start. As we have previously mentioned, quickly cleaning up spilled spots greatly reduces the risk of further damage and permanent stains. Clean white towels and paper towels are the best solution. Remember to dab, not scrub. When using a spot cleaner, always try to test a small area first. There are many different types of fibers and rugs, and some might react adversely to particular cleaners. Vacuuming weekly prolongs the life of your carpet. Excess dirt hidden in carpets acts like sandpaper, scratching each fiber as you walk, creating traffic patterns and dull appearances. Thirdly, we recommend having your carpets professionally steam cleaned once a year, or every six months depending on your traffic, kids, multiple pets, etc. These are great ways to keep your carpets clean and fresh in between professional cleanings.
There are also some preventative measures you can take. Mats at entry ways catch excess dirt before it can spread deeper inside the house. One step further, taking your shoes off on the mats really cuts down the amount of particles brought in from outside. Changing your air filters regularly not only helps prolong the life of your HVAC unit, but also keeps dust and dirt from accumulating in your house. And, as always, we offer Scotchgard, which is always a great solution to keeping your carpets protected from nasty spills and stains.
Small Rugs or Door Mats-Machine washable rugs are always easy. Shake and vacuum the excess dirt from the mat, and load into the washing machine. Wash warm with light detergent, and dry on low heat. With your larger, non-machine washable rugs, vacuum the excess debris from the rug, or you can hang the rug the old fashioned way over a clothesline and beat the tar nation out of it. Vacuuming is also always an option; or call Superior Carpet Cleaning certified technicians for natural fiber rugs that need special care and should be treated that way, such as Oriental and Persian. With large rugs with fringe, always start in the middle and work towards the fringe. Be careful not to suck up the fringe in the brushes, as this can damage the ends. And always remember sweep under the mats.
